What 76 Giving Days Taught Us

Your Giving Day is only as strong as your plan. In 24 hours, thousands of donors decide when to give, how to give, and how much. Every one of those decisions leaves a trace. Most advancement teams still plan around last year’s totals and gut instinct, so they miss the day-before surge, the midday peak, and the donors who would have given twice if asked.

We analyzed 76 organizations that ran spring Giving Days in 2026, including public and private universities, community colleges, K–12 schools, foundations, and affinity groups. Together they raised $120.7M across 206,722 gifts from 117,216 donors. This report turns those patterns into five moves for your next Giving Day.

What’s inside:

  • Gift patterns and channel mix: 88% of online gifts are under $250, and the median gift is $50. More than half of gifts come in on a phone, and one in four comes through a digital wallet or app.
  • The timing that shapes results: 65% of online gifts land on Giving Day itself, and 18K arrive the day before. See why Tuesday through Thursday and the 11 a.m. hour win, and how a midnight-to-midnight day compares with noon to noon.
  • What drives donor behavior: The 17% of donors who give more than once account for 48% of online dollars. Get the data on ambassador reach, fee coverage, and abandoned-cart recovery.
  • Benchmarks by segment: Average gifts range from $62 at community colleges to $554 at private institutions. Compare your results with peers that look like you, and see which fields other organizations put on their giving forms.
